Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Venetian Plaster?
It is an interior finish used mostly on walls and ceilings first made popular in the 1550's in Venice, Italy. In the last few years it has become one of the most sought after wall finishes on the market.

Q: What does it cost?
A: Generally from $5-9 a square foot depending on the existing conditions of the walls, how many layers of Venetian Plaster and how big of an area.

Q: What are the ingredients?
A: Aged slaked lime, marble dust and pigment.

Q: How durable is the Venetian Plaster?
A: Very. More so than paint. It is dent and scratch resistant. It has some flex to it so it tends to resist cracks that would otherwise mar a wall.

Q: Can I wash it?
A: Yes, after the sealer is applied. We use a sealer that doesn’t change the beautiful look of the Venetian Plaster.

Q: Are there samples available?
A: Yes. 2x2 inch, 8x10 and 18x24 inch.

Q: How many colors?
A: 120

Q: Can you make a custom sample?
A: Yes, with a deposit towards the job.

Q: Does it create a mess or dust to apply?
A: Not especially. You would do the same amount of protection as painting; take down pictures, move furniture to middle of room. Cover with plastic, etc.

Q: Can it be used in kitchens/bathrooms/high traffic areas/exteriors?
A: Yes. Please browse our "Plasters" page for finishes suitable for interior/exterior use. The interior/exterior finishes are well suited for any interior area which may get wet, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Many of our other interior finishes may be used in interior areas which may get wet, if protected with a sealant.High traffic areas need one of the more durable interior plasters, or an interior/exterior plaster.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Prices range from $7.00 to $28.00 per square foot of area to be plastered, with additional costs for wall space over 9 feet and ceilings. (100 sq. ft. minimum each finish per job)

For columns, prices start at $75.00 per linear foot.

All prices include materials and labor.

Q: Can you customize a plaster finish just for me?
A: Yes. Because of the artistic nature of Italian plaster application, each wall will be a unique statement with its own distinctive look. We will work with you or your designer to customize colors or combine plaster finishes, creating a beautifully coordinated look within your overall plan.

Stencils are another way to add a distinctly custom look. They may be used to create a raised pattern on your wall, or to create a "watermark" effect, leaving the wall surface smooth. Either effect works well for any custom look you may desire, from vines in your kitchen to your business logo in the reception area.
